What’s Causing My Leg Pain?

What’s Causing My Leg Pain? | Chiropractor NYC Dr Shoshany

Leg pain is a very common occurrence among not only athletes but people of all ages and activity levels, and can manifest in a variety of forms. Because leg muscles are extensively engaged in movement throughout the day, they are prone to injury.  Commonly, leg pain can be caused by inflammation within the leg structure, which includes a multifaceted network of bones, ligaments, nerves, muscles, joints, and blood vessels.  Trauma to any of these structures will result in pain, which can become severe if not treated promptly.

Since the leg is tasked with assisting in supporting the upper body, it can suffer due to trauma originating from other body parts, most frequently the knee, hip, and lower back areas.  When a deviated, bulging, or damaged disc in the lower back/hip area affects the sciatic nerve, the nerve will become inflamed and radiate painful signals down the buttocks and legs (usually on only one side of the body). This condition is known as sciatica and can be easily treated and reversed in the majority of instances without surgical or narcotic intervention. A series of chiropractic adjustments, sometimes with the aid of spinal decompression and physical therapy, can restore discs and surrounding soft tissues to proper alignment and release the sciatic nerve, eliminating the ensuing leg pain. If left untreated, pain can become severe enough to restrict motion and normal activities, such as walking and exercising, and cause permanent nerve and tissue damage in the most severe cases where the patient has waited too long before seeking treatment. Overweight individuals are at a much greater risk for leg pain, as excessive weight places disproportionate stress on the spine and joints, particularly the knees. As a result, bulging discs, joint friction, and pinched nerves are highly likely to develop.

The knees play a major role in providing support to the upper body.  As with sciatica, pain originating in the knee joint can translate to leg pain.  Undue stress to the knee structure can also cause pinched nerves, damage to the cartilage and other important soft tissues, and reduction in lubricating fluid.  Any of these will give rise to painful inflammation and joint friction, which can severely impair natural movement and function, and spread down to the leg.

In most cases, knee and leg pain can be improved and eradicated through non-surgical treatments, such as Dr. Shoshany’s computer-assisted spinal decompression, Active Release Techniques®, chiropractic adjustments, Graston Technique® soft-tissue reconditioning, electric stimulation, customized physical therapy, medical massage therapy, and more.  All of Dr. Shoshany’s treatments are painless and designed to provide relief and long-term results naturally and effectively, and available at his state-of-the-art NYC physical rehabilitation facility.  For further details, please visit www.drshoshany.com or contact 212-645-8151.
