Why I Love Using the Graston Technique. NYC Chiropractor Dr. Steven Shoshany - Soho/West Village
I've been a chiropractor here in SoHo, in New York City since 1999, and my practice has an emphasis on merging high quality chiropractic care with physical therapy. Together they provide outstanding patient results. In most cases what we're looking at is the state of the patients' spinal structure.
We’re looking to see how the spine and overall structure balanced, where its strong, weak, and imbalanced. We know that when the spine is misaligned it can interfere with the body's ability to heal itself. Whether someone has a spinal misalignment in their neck, or their lower back, it can cause a multitude of problems. For instance, seemingly straightforward problems like neck pain can also cause numbness down the arm. If the problems in the lower back it can cause sciatica which is a really painful leg condition.
The Graston Technique tools are excellent tools that we use to help break up myofascial adhesions. Using stainless steel tools, we can perform what is essentially a highly targeted and intense deep tissue massage. This new, localized inflammation, helps to increase blood-flow and promote the healing process.
The chiropractic field focuses on a non-drug approach, so we mostly rely on our hands to adjust and put the vertebrae back in place very gently. We help to normalize the nervous system. A chiropractic adjustment is paramount when it comes to and getting patients better. But in my opinion when we introduce the soft tissue component, that’s when we get the best possible results. Furthermore, the changes and recovery happen a lot faster. The adjustments alone can only provide so much of the success that I'm used to when treating my patients.
I personally incorporate the Graston technique along with chiropractic and physical therapy. The results are almost immediate and within two or three visits we see outstanding results for difficult to treat conditions. Let's take the instance of a patient with shoulder pain. Obviously as a chiropractor I would look at the cervical spine structure to make sure that the cervical spine is properly aligned. I know that when the spine is not aligned it can interfere with the communication between the brain and on down the arm.
There is an appendicular nerve that travels through the brachial plexus, and when “pinched” it can cause weakness and tingling. The pain can also be caused by inflammation within the soft tissue structure itself. There is also concern that the supra-spinatus tendon may have a minor tear. After ruling out any spinal issues, or after properly adjusting the skeletal structure of the spine, and keeping in mind that in this case there was no tingling down the arm, we can move on and address the soft tissue component of the problem.
At our practice the best path has always incorporated physical therapy, along with the Graston technique for soft tissue mobilization, which helps to normalize range of motion and strengthen weak muscles. One of the most common injuries we treat with the Graston technique would be plantar fasciitis which is a very painful and difficult condition. With the Graston Technique in our Soho clinic we can see noticeable results in 3 to 5 visits.
We also use cold laser therapy to treat shoulder injury pain. Another common injury we treat at our Soho NYC clinic is rotator cuff tears. We have found soft tissue injuries to the shoulder respond really well to the Graston technique's soft tissue mobilization. Hamstring restriction, and IT band restriction also seems to respond quickly, and so does chronic knee pain. NYC patients have benefited by the Graston Technique at our Soho physical therapy center in NYC, and is a great addition to our chiropractic practice. I've been practicing in Soho / West Village in Manhattan since 1999 If you want to learn more about the Graston Technique in NYC, simply contact us, or just give us a call at: 212 645 8151
